You may think that keeping your electrical costs low means that you have to sit in your house with no air conditioning and all the lights off. However, you don't have to do that. There are things that you can do help keep your electrical bills low without having to resort to sitting in the heat and the dark.

Avoid Your Oven

If you don't have to use your oven, don't. If you are cooking something small, think about using a microwave or a toaster oven. A toaster oven is very versatile; it will let you cook dinner, heat up leftovers, and even make toast. The benefits of avoiding your oven can be many. One is that you won't be using as much energy. The larger the appliance, the more heat it has to produce to fill the space, and the more energy that takes up. On top of that, your oven really heats up the air around it, making your air conditioner have to work harder, which will also take more energy to get the temperature back to where you want it.

Look Around at Other Companies

In many cities, it is possible for you to choose between several electric companies. That deregulation can help you because electric companies are now competing for your business. Some companies will offer different electric rates, so you can customize the plan to your needs. Whichever electrical company you choose will still be able to use the existing wires and meter; you just get the choice of lower prices.

Get Energy Efficient Light Bulbs

CFL and LED lights are very energy efficient. They use less electricity to put out more light than incandescent bulbs do. Traditional bulbs heat up when they are on. That is a waste because they are using the electricity poorly. The more heat a light bulb puts out, the more electricity it is wasting. CFLs and LED bulbs don't put out much heat at all, so you get much more light for the same amount of power. An added bonus is that you don't have the heat from the bulbs heating up your house as well.

Paint the Roof

Amazingly enough, painting your roof white will help with your electrical bills. That's because the white roof will bounce the majority of the sun's heat back off the roof, which keeps it out of your house. Your electricity prices will stay lower because your air conditioner doesn't have to work as hard to make sure that your house stays at the nice, comfortable temperature that you set it at.

Keeping your electric bill down can take a little work, but that little bit of work can translate into a lot of savings.
